Glutamate is a neurotransmitter, which can cause headache and seizures. Those of us that suffer from migraine or epilepsy tend to have more glutamate. Too much glutamate promotes hyperexcitability and contributes to migraine. Interestingly, ketones block glutamate. More than this though, keto increases levels of GABA, which is the neurotransmitter that acts in opposition to glutamate, it has a calming effect, and can reduce migraine.

Interestingly, many of the medications used to treat epilepsy target and block glutamate. This is why those medications are also often used to treat migraine.

Energy deficit refers to the ability of our body t

Energy deficit refers to the ability of our body to extract energy from the food we consume. In order to be used by our bodies, that food needs to be metabolised. If what we consume can't be metabolised properly, this will result in an energy deficit in our central nervous system. This causes irritation to our nerves, which could potentially bring on a migraine.

So, how does keto help with energy deficit? Our cells become insulin resistant or struggle considerably in processing insulin, before migraine onset, and during an attack. This means that if we eat a higher carb diet, our cells will not be nourished in the way that they need and this ultimately leads to the energy deficit. That said, I understand this to mean that the migraine might have already been in motion. The migraine was not necessarily caused by the energy deficit that relates to our inability to metabolise glucose in the carbohydrates, but it goes to show how eating higher carb before and during a migraine can impact our bodies ability to counteract it.

If we are in fact insulin resistant before and during a migraine, being on a keto diet provides our brain and body with an alternative fuel source, and this is crucial if we do have an impaired energy metabolism in the brain.

What’s your favourite thing about keto?

One of my favourite things is that hunger just feels different. It feels more genuine. It’s not like a desperate ‘hunger’ that it used to be. To be honest though, that’s probably because they were actually cravings, not true hunger at all. I don’t really crave specific foods like I used to. It feels, more than ever, like I’m treating food as fuel. Even when I am hungry, if I’m out or busy I can wait, because those cravings don’t consume me. I don’t find myself thinking about food all of the time.

I’ve been using Macro Linseed & Sunflower Low Carb Loaf bread.

It does contains wheat gluten, which is the protein extracted from wheat, so not suitable if you are gluten free or are avoiding gluten. It is however affordable, widely available in Australia, and low carb at only 3.2g net carb for 2 slices.

Migraine is commonly associated with inflammation, which interestingly could be a protective feature for our brain. It is thought that migraine might be the brain's attempt to restore balance.

Think about the reason we might have a fever; it's the bodies attempt to kill of the infection. Once the fever breaks, balance is restored. Remember though, both migraine and fever can be incredibly dangerous.

That aside, a lot of carbohydrates are naturally more inflammatory in our body. Ketones however are far less inflammatory, and this is one reason why keto could help to reduce migraine.

Now, I want to stress that not all carbs are bad, but we should be aware of how our bodies respond to different carb sources. We all have our own triggers. The reason why prebiotics and probiotics are encouraged, is to boost postbiotics. This means that the end goal IS postbiotics.

It’s always best to consume nutrients from food sources, but if you want to directly boost postbiotics, you’ll need to supplement. Ideally a supplement with butyrate. Unlike pre and probiotics though, research on postbiotics is relatively new, and many studies are currently in motion. That said there is some research that is starting to suggest that many of the health benefits we attribute to probiotics, may actually be the benefit from postbiotics.

If you choose to supplement it’s worth knowing the benefits of postbiotic supplementation over probiotic supplementation.

Probiotics are live microorganisms. Some people don’t tolerate probiotics well as it can cause mild stomach discomfort. This is not an issue with postbiotics as there is no live bacteria introduced to your system. Making it a better option if you do experience stomach discomfort, are immune compromised, have an immature immune system or if you have a leaky gut.

Therefore, “postbiotics could potentially be a way to send anti-inflammatory signals to the immune cells of your gut, without introducing bacteria,” says Jessica Blanchard, Registered Dietitian.
